Making an Edwardian Vest out of Quilting Cotton
This month, I found myself in a time crunch and had to whip up a project in just a few days. The result? A one-of-a-kind vest that I absolutely love! Using a beautiful mix of pink, burgundy, green, blue, and white quilting cottons, I created a vest that's both rustic and charming, with colors that blend perfectly together.
The process wasn’t without its challenges-turning a single-breasted pattern into a double-breasted design was tricky, especially since the Keystone Guide didn't quite cover the overlap needed for the buttons. Despite this, the vest turned out wonderfully, though it’s still just a bit looser than I’d like.
This vest feels a bit more modern than my usual projects, but it's incredibly wearable for everyday use, and I’m thrilled to add it to my wardrobe. The rush to finish in just 3 days was intense, but I’m so glad I managed to pull it off! This project has also prepared me for my next vest, which will be a completely different take, and I can’t wait to share that with you all soon.
I hope you enjoy watching this quick and fun project come to life as much as I enjoyed making it!

The Autumn Sweater: Learning Tunisian Crochet the Hard Way
Love the vest, it is so cute!!!
Thank you! It's a fun addition to my wardrobe
This vest is sew amazing
😆 thank you! Lol
That was a quick project! Super cute!
Thanks! Yeah, I kinda flew through this one lol
Best narration and visual execution yet - you go girl! 😊 How about a full undergarment series? And then there is those hoops... don't know if you really want to get into those mid 18th century Styles.
I'd love an excuse to make full outfits from almost any time period from the 1910s and back! Main issues are having enough fabric and enough storage space lol
Very impressive work!
Thank you! It was quite a challenge!
You are so clever and industrous!
Thank you! 😊
Nice to follow your prosess. This was interesting.
Thanks! It was kinda tricky to figure out how to present this project
Clever lady! Corset patterns would be awesome! You’d have to include a couple of extra measurements; underbust and front-underbust, underbust to waist, armpit to waist, front waist and back waist, front high hip and back high hip 😃
I'll be studying as many Foundations Revealed articles as I can for that!
Very cool! I love when folks make these kind of things more accessible. My ADHD brain is like 🤯 for those written instructions lol.
I know right? It was crazy to me to see how long the list of steps was!
THIS IS GLORIOUS, I SHARED IT TO A SEWING DISCORD I'M ON!
Yay! Let me know if you end up using it, and if there's any designs you'd like to see in this app in the future. And tell everyone in the discord I said hi! lol
❤😊
Great job💜💜
Thank you!
I know I’m super late to comment but i thought id share an experience i had with one of these books. I chose what i thought would be easy…a nightgown. I tried scaling it the same way you did where the proportion was used on the horizontal measurements but not the height and the yoke came out a completely different shape. I asked about it on a facebook group that uses these books a lot and they all said that the proportion scale needed to be used on the bodice height as well. So when I redrafted the yoke it did come out correctly. I was told to be careful with the height of the scale on skirts, legs, and length of the body on the nightgown. Lol it was quite the learning experience. Your shirtwaist did turn out beautifully though! Congratulations for sticking with it.
So weird! I wish the instructions were more clear. This next video I'm using the Keystone guide, which is much more detailed, so hopefully it'll turn out better lol.
Oh i hope it goes well!
I've made several patterns from this book. I started with a simple skirt. I made the pattern 3x! And 3 different mock-ups for the skirt! Since I was using an expensive wool Cashmere, i wanted to make sure the skirt was correct. I cut everything and made it. Even to this day, even though the whole entire ensemble looks beautiful with all the vintage lace, Im still not happy with the pattern. The next skirt I made was a Truly Victorian walking skirt. Which I wear all the time. A lot of these patterns need tweeking. You have to do mock-ups before cutting!!! Finish in the usual manner....???🤔 Love your videos..😊
Lol I know, right? "Finish in the usual manner"? I love that this book has so many designs and ideas, but it definitely isn't the easiest to use
Isn't it exciting when a Corset finally fits, right???😊 Great job on finishing this corset.
Thank you! I'm utterly in love with this pattern, and will definitely have to make one for myself!
Your tiny supervisor is adorable!❤ Well done on the corset!
Thank you! And yes, she is lol
I must say this has been an experience for you to give up the old corset and all, to make the new one; but I think you really pulled it off! Congratulations, it's beautiful! I think the design of the new one is simple and elegant. I do like the little puff lining inside the bottom of the corset. It helps it to lay much better and accentuates the waist. I missed the terminology, maybe it's the corset "skirt?" Anyway, you know what I mean. Lots of work and a lot of fun for both you and Jo. Now you need to make one for yourself!
Thank you! The hip panels ended up so dramatic and gorgeous!
KYLA, You are an amazing designer; and I'm just so excited to see all the Creations that you're going to be making as time goes by... You bring a real freshness and original CONCEPT into crochet - transforming endless repetative stiches into a 3 dimensional painter's pallet! For instance your Autumn Sweater is wearable ART! And who wouldn't want a beautiful scarf with the Starry Starry Night ⭐️🌟🌙 theme swirling and dancing around their neck as they walk out on a brisk winter's evening? Looking forward to the Sunflower sweater creation.
Your second short! Umm a fancy thing?
Your First Short! Yay!
I really like this video and the cat is the main character lol!
Hey! The title of this video promised us millinery, but all I see is a bunch of women's hats! Such trickery ;P
Lol so sorry. 😂 I hope the feline shenanigans can make up for it!
Well, quite a brave endeavor, but how fun to work on a design idea, figuring it out as you go! Clever and in the end so striking, one would never guess it wasn't created by a professional hat maker! Cut title for this video: THE CAT & THE HAT! Comic relief with kitty stealing the show from time to time!
Thank you! This project was so much fun
Looking forward!
What a brain drain! Congratulations on your fortitude. It would definitely be in the naughty pile
Thank you! Ironically, now that I have altered the pattern thoroughly, I kinda want to make another one, just to make sure I fixed it! Lol
New subscriber, love your sewing adventures!
Yay! Thank you!
Watched again, and enjoyed it even more! Would like to see the back of the blouse close-up for a little more detail. Excited to see the next project!
Really enjoy seeing the blouse as you narrate. So lovely!
Thank you!
Wow! What an experience! I think you should make up your own pattern book! You have taken an artistic design conception and a pattern that clearly doesn't replicate the concept and have reworked both into your very own style! Creatively clever to say the least! And the hat! Now that is an accomplishment in itself. Can I safely say, hats off to you? Now the gloves, I can see black croched gloves; Nevertheless, what a delightful outfit for an afternoon tea or Matinee. Tra-la-la, I should think you will be the talk of the town - definitely setting a trend! And do squeeze that budding little seamstress for me, she is growing up with a fashion artist Mom! Avoir!
Well done!!
Thank you!!
Peaceful...that's what we all need - those peaceful moments...
Please do more nail/nail art contents 😍
I'm so glad you like it! I love doing nail art, and I'll probably do more here and there! :)
Please let me know when you do the cat's nails.
😆
You have very beautifully shaped fingernails, Just naturally they are very pretty.
Thank you!
Watching and will send to my sister, who is also a nail artist.
Gorgeous colors, and swirling and lovely. Amazing design, and I'm sure very few could come up with the way to create it. I've never seen a crochet hook with such a long tube attached. Nice job with showing us your progress on it through video. I love tunisian crochet, but I've never tried anything like this. Wow.
Thank you! This was so much fun, and also exhausting lol
Just finished watching, the corset modeling story at the end of your design; it brought me mysteriously back to the 1860's enchanted atmosphere where a woman was not only intriguing and beautiful, but bore a heart full of drama and secrets!
Thank you! I wish I had something more 1860s to wear, but the Edwardian-ish look kinda worked out!
Excellent intro! Can't wait to see your unique design!
Thank you! I really love how this one turned out!
I have made items from this book, but I was using their ruler in both directions. I need to re-read the initial chapters about that. Your chemise turned out lovely and your helper is a great yard stick holder downer 😛👶
Thank you! Yeah, the instructions are a bit confusing at first, but once you get it, the process is pretty simple.
I too used the scale ruler for my bust size for the width measurements too, because the instructions actually tell us to! On page 7, the 2nd paragraph down, beginning ‘This gives all the numbers….’ The 3rd sentence says: Place the scale on the short arm of the square - be sure to use the bust measure as for the baseline. My pattern came out way too long and I was so disappointed. Kyla, can you tell us exactly where you see the instruction to use a normal tape measure for the width measurements please. I’ve looked and looked but can’t find it. It certainly makes more sense!
It's never made super clear, but here are a few passages that lead me to believe you are supposed to use the bust scale ruler for the horizontal measures and a regular ruler for the vertical: Page 1: "This combination of proportional and inch measurements makes the Diamond Cutting System a 'hybrid' system." Page 5: "The Diamond Cutting System consists of a square... A set of scales, a tape measure..." (Tape measure and square are shown to have regular inches. The square allows either side of it to have one of the scales attached to it) Page 339 (and many others) "use the scale corresponding with the bust measure to draft this pattern... Regulate the length by the tape measure" Again, it's never made super clear, but these references lead me to believe you're supposed to use the scale for horizontal and the tape measure for the vertical. However, after making this chemise and the blouse on 339, I think you should use two different scales where necessary, the bust (or waist) measure for the horizontal, and some other scale for the vertical as needed.
What scale for the vertical? It takes a bit of clever math, but here's the simplest explanation I can manage: With some simple measuring, I found that the 30 scale is exactly the same as inches. To find the ratio of any of the other scales, simply divide (S)cale by 30: 34 scale's ratio: 34 ÷ 30 = 1.33 26 scale's ratio: 26 ÷ 30 = 0.87 Then, measure on yourself the vertical height you want your finished garment to be. Let's say you're making the blouse on 339. The center back is about 14 3/8" long, and my center back measurement is 16" long. So, to find what scale I need to use, I need to find the similar ratio: (desired measurement)/(One-to-one measurement) = scale ratio 16 ÷ 14.375 = 1.113 Ratio × 30 = needed scale 1.113 × 30 = 33.39 (rounded up is 34) So, I would use the 34 scale for the vertical measurements and my waist + 10 for my bust measurement (I'm small busted, so my actual bust measurement of 35 doesn't fit my shoulders) Hope this helps!
@@KylaBendrik Thank you, I’m actually excited now to try again!
It looks lovely well done. Enjoyed the demonstration. Would like to see more.
Thank you! The chemise will appear in a lot of future videos, so keep your eye out for it!
Looks great! I'm looking forward to more historical projects! :)
You and me both!
Exquisite designing! And how satisfying to complete this project.
Thank you very much!
Coat of many colors! What a beautiful flowing design! Love your creative energy and designs!
Thank you! This project was such a Herculean task, but I dearly loved it. Someday I want to make something like it for myself :)
Oh nice! Marry Christmas!
Merry Christmas!
